Greenhouse Gas Intensity Study of Natural Gas

thinkstep performed an industry-wide Well-to-Wheel analysis that analysed the different Natural Gas supply chains to Europe and its use, mainly in the transportation sector

thinkstep has conducted an industry-wide assessment about the impact on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of the supply of natural gas to Europe and its use in the European Union.

The goal of the study was to provide reliable and up-to-date industry-based life cycle GHG emission data from the entire natural gas chain, focusing on road transportation (Well-to-Wheel), but also considering ship transport (Well-to-Wake) as well as power generation (Well-to-Grid).

More than 50 companies from across the gas value chain took part in the study by providing consistent, high quality and up-to-date data.

The study is intended to inform the public and to support the dialogue with external stakeholders and policy makers. It also aims to contribute to an informed debate during the revision process of the different policy actions concerning clean and efficient mobility, like the Fuel Quality Directive, the Clean Vehicle Directive, etc.

Europe’s activities in developing a strategic vision for sustainable mobility will be supported by this new reference document in the Natural Gas domain.

NGVA Europe, the European Natural & bio Gas Vehicle Association, supported by a wide partnership of industry organisations, commissioned this study.
