Cradle to Cradle® and LCA

Cradle to Cradle® & LCA

Improve your Products and develop new ones with Cradle to Cradle® and LCA.

The human footprint we have on our planet is simply unsustainable. We are using too many limited natural resources and often unintelligently. As the Ellen MacArthur Foundation says, we need to go “beyond the current take-make-dispose industrial extraction model” and design a circular economy that aims to redefine growth, focusing on positive society-wide benefits.

A true circular economy will lead to new business models and companies taking responsibility, from the very beginning of product design throughout their lifespan, including end-of-use and recycling.

With its solutions for material compliance management and life cycle assessment (LCA), thinkstep supports organizations toward better product design for more resource efficiency.

EPEA is the cradle of Cradle to Cradle®, a design and innovation concept based on the safe and potentially infinite use of materials in nutrient cycles.

By joining forces, EPEA and thinkstep will scale the Cradle to Cradle design concept using software solutions. These software solutions will be combined with quantitative assessments to maximize product and service innovation, incorporating circularity, resource efficiency as well as future-proof material compliance.

Please visit the EPEA website for more information on EPEA and Cradle to Cradle®.

Our LCA and Cradle to Cradle® Joint Offerings

Through our cooperation with EPEA we have some valuable joint offerings that enable you to kick-start Cradle to Cradle® product innovation:

Joint Cradle to Cradle® & LCA strategy workshop

Identify and describe opportunities and synergies for integrating Cradle to Cradle and LCA approaches at company and/or product level.

Cradle to Cradle® Banned List Screener

Screen the Bill of Materials (BOM) of your product against the C2C banned-list of substances using a web-based tool. Find out more.

Cradle to Cradle® QuickScan

Evaluate the C2C certification potential of a product based on the five C2C criteria: Material Health, Material Reutilization, Renewable Energy, Water Stewardship, Social Fairness.

Joint EPD and C2C certification™

Combine your EPD with a C2C Certified™ certification or Material Health Assessment and use synergies through combined data collection and project management.

Cradle to Cradle certification™

Achieve a full initial Cradle to Cradle Certified™ certification for your product or service.

Your Benefits

Incorporate Circularity

Apply a product innovation concept that incorporates true design for circularity.

Become more cost-efficient

Avoid shifting of burdens between and across life-cycle or within supply chain.

Ready yourself for future-proof compliance

Take a stronger precautionary approach to material and substance compliance – design for future-proof compliance.

Calculate holistically

Take energy, water and carbon footprint of product alternatives into account.

LCA and Cradle to Cradle®

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Cradle to Cradle® are two very different approaches to product sustainability—at first.

From an LCA perspective, we strive to reduce the environmental burden of products by reducing negative impacts. We optimize products and services by quantifying environmental impacts across the entire life cycle of a product to avoid shifting burdens. By increasing efficiencies—reducing the negative impacts per output—we are doing good.

Cradle to Cradle® starts by looking at the function of a product and whether its materials can be contained either in a technical cycle (no material is lost to the environment) or a biological cycle (material can be released safely into the environment). By selecting the right materials for each cycle, Cradle to Cradle® products by design are optimized for the reuse of materials and don’t have negative impacts, but positive impacts instead.

By combining forces, we can support companies improving their existing products while evoking new product innovation that combines true circularity with resource efficiency.
