Leinfelden-Echterdingen, 19.8.2015 - thinkstep today announced it is laying a common data foundation for reliable life-cycle-based assessments as well as product and organizational carbon footprints through free environmental LCI data for energy and transportation.
Any environmental assessment such as Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Carbon Footprint or corporate environmental reporting, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) or the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), can now benefit from a common, independently reviewed energy and transport data foundation based on audited workflows from thinkstep’s databases.
The data describes environmental burdens, such as emission factors or consumption of resources from different types of energy generation and transport systems. Covered by the data are country-specific electricity grid mixes, country-specific fuel import mixes as well as data sets on the generation of steam and thermal energy from different fuels for more than 55 countries. In addition, LCI data representing the most important refinery products are provided for 10 countries.
The parameterized “unit processes” data sets of the most widely used transportation means on road, water and air allow the modelling of most transportation processes. For example, data sets for different truck types and sizes are each adjustable to five pre-defined emission standards with country-specific fuels. This is complemented by data sets for recycling, energy-recovery and waste disposal for a wide range of waste materials.
The majority of the data sets have been developed in cooperation with businesses and industry associations and benefit from an ISO-compliant and documented quality assurance process audited by DEKRA. Importantly, the open data can be used and reviewed by the world community and dedicated experts from thinkstep will provide quality assurance on an annual basis.
The data is available for free download under a creative commons license on a dedicated website. The LCI data sets will also be made available via the Data Network of the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD), now renamed to Life Cycle Data Network (LCDN) of the European Commission, in ILCD format for global interoperability in August 2015. For more information on Life Cycle Data Network (LCDN) see http://eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu/?page_id=134 or
Energy and transport is the foundation of the global economy. This data enables life cycle and sustainability professionals worldwide to overcome the lack of credible and independently reviewed LCI data. We are doing our part by providing a free, global data foundation to quantify the environmental burden of products and services over their entire supply chains.
Bruce Vigon, Scientific Affairs Manager at SETAC states, “This initiative provides vital information sources and access to suitable data to stimulate the setup of individual national data activities and regional capacity on all continents.”
“Llorenç Mila i Canals from UNEP concurs, “Having access to suitable data will reduce the costs of initiating national LCA Databases, thus fostering LCA capacity building in many regions globally; this would contribute to UNEP's endeavor of enabling global application of life cycle approaches.”
The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission welcomes the creation and substantial expansion of a thinkstep node in the Life Cycle Data Network. This stimulates ongoing initiatives at EU and global level, mitigating data constraints and supporting the pathway towards a global network of interoperable databases.
About thinkstep data
thinkstep has over 20-years of experience inventorying data for life-cycle-based assessments. Our GaBi data is the leading Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data on the market, providing more than 7,000 environmental profiles of materials and processes. This inventory resides in thinkstep’s Global Industrial Process and Impact Database. GaBi data is included in many governmental and National LCI database projects, including Germany, France, the EU, Brazil and Malaysia. More than 40 industry associations rely on GaBi LCI data as the background data for their own LCI creation processes and many engineering and design professionals access GaBi data integrated into their PLM or CAD system to evaluate design scenarios. For more information about GaBi data visit www.thinkstep.com/software/gabi-lca/gabi-databases.
thinkstep enables organizations worldwide to succeed sustainably.
