Product Compliance

Product Compliance

Trends that matter – keep up with ever changing substance compliance requirements!

Nearly every company is required to provide proof of the origin and usage of determined materials. The use of these materials are subjected to strict restrictions. Infringements against these regulations are punished with high fines or imprisonment.

For companies, regulations such as REACH, RoHS or Conflict Minerals are binding as soon as they directly or indirectly supply a manufacturer. The focus of these regulations are the disclosure and obligation of information according to the origin and composition of the used materials.
thinkstep’s Product Compliance is the leading system to manage your substance compliance information throughout your product lifecycle and to check your product structure with various environmental compliance regulations (e.g. RoHS, REACH, Conflict Minerals, California Proposition 65, POPs, Biocide etc.).

What Does Product Compliance Mean?

Nowadays almost all products are subject to material restrictions.

This does not necessarily mean the prohibition of substances – this may also be the reporting of obligations or provisions, which restricting the use of substances for specific applications. In Europe, REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) should be mentioned here.

Depending on the sector the respective substance prohibition are different: for electronics products it is the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), for the automotive industry the ELV (End of Life Vehicles Directive) which bans substances.

Large companies also precept their suppliers with substance prohibition and reporting requirements on material content for the components and materials they purchase. There are also industry-wide standard lists in the electronics and automotive industries.

For small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) the adherence of material restrictions poses a major challenge. Because whether their products meet the requirements depends primarily on the purchased parts and materials. The information on the compliance of these purchased parts and materials must be requested along the supply chain.

The cooperation of the supply chain depends on the effectiveness of the whole process. Across the supply chain it is a core task of a material reporting process to make the compliance information transparent as well as effective and efficient at the same time.

As a result, a working material reporting process is essential for documenting compliance with substance bans.

What information must be reported?

All information needed that is relevant to prove product and material compliance. The requirements that a product has to accomplish depends on the type of product, the place of launch, the product use and in case of components in which end product it is installed.

To handle product compliance is very complicated - therefore practical and affordable solutions are important for SMEs. thinkstep AG and chance-N have written on their flag to fine and offer these solutions. They have entered into a cooperation to provide customized solutions for SMEs.
